WHAT ARE 'CHAKRAS'?

The chakra system is a complex and ancient system of energy centers that exist within the body. While this system is often associated with Eastern spiritual practices such as yoga and meditation, it has gained widespread popularity in Western medicine and holistic healing.

The word "chakra" comes from the Sanskrit word for "wheel" or "circle," and these energy centers are often depicted as spinning wheels of light.

Each chakra is associated with specific physical, emotional, and spiritual functions, and understanding the chakra system can help you mange your energy flow to achieve greater balance, health and harmony in your lives.

THE MODERN ANCIENT WAY

Our retreat practices include energy healing techniques to balance the chakras. We believe this is a powerful way to support students to know their energy body, cultivate greater awareness and healing, and move towards a state of harmony.

Below are some of the benefits of understanding your chakras:

  • Promotes physical, emotional, and spiritual healing: Energy healing is a holistic approach that seeks to address imbalances and blockages in the energy systems of the body. By working with the chakras, we can identify and release energetic blockages that may be causing physical, emotional, or spiritual pain. This can promote greater overall health and wellbeing.

  • Encourages self-awareness and personal growth: The chakra system is a powerful way to understand different aspects of our being, including our physical body, emotions, thoughts, and spiritual nature. By knowing the chakras and working with them in a mindful way, individuals can experience a deeper level of personal growth, greater self-acceptance, and a more authentic expression of one's true self.

  • Supports stress reduction and relaxation: Energy healing practices are deeply relaxing and can help to reduce stress and anxiety. By promoting a state of deep relaxation and calm, individuals can release tension and create space for healing and renewal.

  • Enhances spiritual connection and intuition: The chakra system is intimately connected with our spiritual nature, and working with the the subtle energies within and around us can help to deepen their spiritual connection and intuition.

Ancient yogic tradition refers to the subtle energy body, separate to the physical body, where prana (life-force energy) flows through numerous minuscule pathways known as nadis (Sanskrit for ‘channel’ or ‘stream’).

According to tantric texts, there are 72,000 nadis in the body channelling prana to each cell. However the three nadis considered to be of most significance are Ida (feminine channel), Pingala (masculine channel) and Sushumna (central spiritual channel).

The Ida and Pingala nadis begin their ascent from the base of the spine flowing from left and right respectively, as they cross around the Sushumna, and work their way through the major energy centers, chakras, within the subtle energy body.

Traditionally there are seven major chakras through which these two nadis flow, beginning at the first chakra (Root/ Muladhara) and through to the seventh (Crown/ Sahasrara) chakra, with the ultimate aim of balancing these two energies so as to invoke a transcendental power, known as Kundalini (Sanskrit for ‘coiled snake’ ), which lays dormant at the base of the spine in the first chakra.

When Kundalini (Shakti) is awakened it travels up the Sushumna (the spine in the physical body) to meet with pure consciousness (Shiva) in the Crown chakra.

This unification, balancing of the male and female energies, is the embodiment of enlightenment, where the soul returns to spirit and supreme and divine consciousness is achieved.

Sacred medicine heals the energy body, including balance of male and female channels; resulting in peace, love and bliss.
