The benefits and potential for a happier life outweigh the
temporary amount of discomfort experienced. Any nervousness
and fear soon disappear after the first ceremony and generally,
people go on to do more.

In our view sacred plant medicine is beneficial and safe to take for most people (see contraindications below) however, it is important to conduct your own independent research. We strongly encourage you to develop your knowledge base on the subject and become firm and clear on your intention for taking part in a ceremony.

Most importantly, ask yourself how you feel – are you feeling called? In our experience, one who feels a deep attraction to sacred medicine (and is properly educated and emotionally and psychologically supported throughout the process) can derive significant benefits and profound healing even with just a single ceremony. This type of experience can provide profound introspection, insights that heal – and quite possibly an experience with love that rivals all that came before. In the case where one is not intuitively drawn to a sacred medicine experience, but has been encouraged by friends, family and the experience of others, a positive experience is achievable by setting a clear intention to consciously engage in the preparation (including the diet) and maintain a genuine willingness to keep an open mind.

See our FAQs for further information on the safety and benefits of using sacred medicine, as well as details about what to expect during your ceremonies.

Sacred plant medicine has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of dis-ease and serious health conditions including but not limited to all kinds of  addictions, pain and depression. It is possible to cure a whole host of health conditions and illnesses with sacred medicine because they treat the root cause of the problem by performing deep healing in the mental, physical and emotional bodies. You can read more about each medicine we use and their benefits on our sacred medicine page. Based on the ancient principles of bio-energy healing, health conditions and ailments usually occur after the traumas, resentments, inner turmoil and pain has been revealed and released. Many are not aware of such inhibitors within their bio-energetic sphere, including how such imbalances affect all areas of health and daily life.

While we perform a risk assessment to evaluate the medical and other implications for prospective students through our screening process, it is primarily your responsibility to understand the contraindications and provide accurate responses. This is paramount to ensuring your safety and overall wellbeing, as well as the safety of the group.

If no medical or other barriers to your safe participation are present, then consuming sacred plant medicine requires completion of a pre-diet for at least 5 days to a week before participating in a ceremony. This preparation diet excludes consummation of certain foods, flavors, alcohol, drugs and chemicals as well as sexual intimacy and external stimulation that produces adverse emotional reactions (such as listening to music with offensive language or watching material containing violence or horrors). Such preparation of the mind and body is key to maintaining a higher life state and supports positive results.

Shamans and ancient cultures used sacred plants in traditional settings which viewed the plants as separate entities, hence the reference to ‘plant teachers’. Therefore from this spiritual perspective, by consuming sacred plant medicine, one invites in the presence of very high spiritual beings that assist in reaching greater levels of consciousness and clarity. As our bio-energetic sphere adjusts to their presence, releasing the necessary trauma and issues, many will physically purge. While this is an integral part of the experience, on a practical level non-adherence to the diet can make this process more challenging than it would be otherwise. The longer and stricter the diet is maintained, the greater the benefits experienced from the medicine.

See detailed information on the preparation diet and recommendations.  We also provide holistic guidance following your booking and running up to your retreat program to assist your preparation.

See our FAQs for further information on the safety and benefits of using sacred medicine, as well as details about what to expect during your ceremonies.

It is generally safe to consume sacred plant medicine provided that there are no contraindications and/ or mental health issues. Please read the information below carefully before booking a retreat with us.

We use a short prescreening questionnaire during booking to determine immediate suitability. This is followed up by an assessment form and guidance post booking to support us to learn more about you, your reasons for attending the retreat, whether there are any medical or other barriers to your attendance and if we need to make any special arrangements on our end to support you. Our screening questions are not exhaustive and we reserve the right to decline a booking if upon review we determine that the information presents a heightened health risk to the wellbeing of the applicant. We take seriously our responsibility to properly screen and create a positive personal development experience for each student, therefore this right is exercised in the interests of one’s own safety and the safety of other students.

Below are some of the known considerations which present a higher health and safety risk:

– psychosis, bipolar disorders and associated medications
– heart conditions
– hypertension and associated medications
– asthma medication
– antihistamines medication
– recreational drugs (cocaine, LSD, amphetamines, MDMA and other hallucinogens)
– serotonin boosters (although lack of evidence over the past 10 years to support this consideration)

Note that the medications that are not compatible with Ayahuasca are not necessarily true for San Pedro, given that the Ayahuasca vine contains monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) while huachuma contains phenylethylamines (PEAs), of which mescaline is one. Therefore anti – depression medication and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most relevant contraindications to note for San Pedro. Please consult your doctor before stopping any medication. If you do stop taking your medication, it is advised that this takes place at least one month before your ceremony.

Our screening process allows us to make a clear assessment on heighten risk versus lower risk. Many factors are taken into account and we will always reach out to discuss your application if we feel further evaluation is needed based on the information provided. If we are not able to offer you any medicine on retreat we are happy to suggest alternative non-medicinal healing options. Please email us at info (at) modernancient (dot) com if you would like to discuss any conditions/ medications or if further information is sought before making a booking.

While each individual will experience sacred plant medicine differently, many experiences have produced visions, deep healing and life changes for the better, including in health, love, happiness, self expression and/ or mystical states. One of the most commonly reported experiences is a state of pure bliss; a connection to higher consciousness and love, and an incredible experience of being one with all and everything. So be prepared for your heart and mind to be blown open! This is certainly desirable and exciting for those who are seeking a deeper level of consciousness and to propel heartfelt change into their lives. There is also the ‘nada‘ experience,  which can be rephrased as the ‘no experience experience’  given its ability to provide equally profound insights into one’s psychological state.

Depending on the individual, a single retreat experience is sufficiently profound to balance, heal and deepen their connection to a higher life state, while others may need further ceremonies to release deeply rooted states, resistance to change and conditioned mental and/or behavioral patterns. Sacred plant medicine is a beautiful and challenging journey, and one very quickly realizes this on retreat and after, for it is the integration which truly defines where we are in our personal growth journey. Some nervousness and fear is common for anyone who partakes in a ceremony for the first time.

Sacred medicine can almost be described as a fast track healing process, as it very quickly shows us many truths about our reality and the universe, the lives we are leading and the choices laid before us. However, it is then up to us as to how to we choose to proceed with the information and experience received – some resist as it can be fairly intense to awaken to their truth, and this acceptance takes time (or is permanently resisted). Some make life changing decisions, return to plant medicine simply for the mystical experiences or decide that it was a beautiful (or not beautiful) experience and prefer not to question their current reality. Whatever the path, it is certainly a significant step in seeking personal growth and learning more about who we truly are and why we are here on planet Earth leading the lives we currently experience.

Overall, the benefits and potential for a happier life outweigh the temporary amount of discomfort experienced. Any nervousness and fear soon disappear after the first ceremony and generally, people go on to do more.

  • Modern Ancient was a very different experience than my previous ceremonies, mainly because of the thorough preparation and the education about what’s happening to you on all levels. I love the group sharing, care and love they facilitated between us all. My experience with Iboga which was a new medicine for me, was incredible - more like a lifetime of therapy in one night! This also could have been because I ‘navigated’ in the way they advised us and undertook all preparation sent. I took bio-energy sessions for three months for my post integration and I would really recommend that for anyone because it was also like a deeper level of life coaching. I finally have more income and at the same time discovering my purpose in this lifetime with your loving support.

  • I am blessed to have been looked after by such beautiful people and I am overwhelmed with gratitude. This is a very professional, knowledgeable, compassion and down to earth team, and it was obvious even from the decision following my one on one conversation to do more iboga and less ayahuasca (they explained the chakras to me and because of my energetic body and life issues I have going on) right through to the integration and coaching I had before and after ceremony. The attention to detail, small group and personalization is phenomenal, I felt so supported by everyone. I hope that they will continue with this level of quality as they grow and formalize the center in Peru because they will no doubt be the place of choice for this type of work. Also I had never been so interested in yoga before and now I am hooked on Kundalini and already feeling grounded into my physical body.

  • If you are not sure about Modern Ancient, call them and ask every question under the sun - like I did! and you will feel by speaking to them that they really care about you and what’s going on in your life. I feel a lot more confident in my spiritual path, and it was very refreshing to have this all explained to me in quite simple terms. The pain I had along my left leg and hamstring which came and went over the past few years has since disappeared and hasn’t returned! Also I was able to make the connection with the things I need to change to move forward. I’m happy I took this jump - thank you to Modern Ancient for making this an unforgettable experience.
